Most commonly known for it’s Full Moon parties, Koh Phangan is anything but a tacky, drink fuelled, party island. It boasts some of the most alluring beaches in Thailand and arguably has the best vibe of any of the Thai islands, once you get to know it. Koh Phangan is located on the east coast and makes up one of three islands, the others being Koh Samui and Koh Tao.
The island caters for every type of traveller. Backpackers, flashpackers and even you in between lot that don’t want to stay in a 12 bed dorm or pay the price for a swanky hotel.
Full Moon Party
If you are not yet aware, Haad Rinn is the home of the Full Moon party and is where the majority of travellers descend to once a month to attend one of the biggest beach parties in the world. It’s on most peoples bucket list who travel Thailand. Up to 30,000 people head to Koh Phangan for this one off event so you can imagine how busy it gets. Accommodation gets booked up quick and there is a minimum 4/5 night stay over a full moon period so the island really comes to life.
Echo Beach Backpackers
There are plenty of gorgeous beach resorts to choose from all at different standards, but by far our favourite is Echo Beach Backpackers in Ban Tai, the next town down from Haad Rinn, so it is the perfect place to escape the madness. A buzzing hostel that also has private double rooms and a bar that leads onto the beach where theres a tree house and hammocks to watch the sunset from. Prices start from as little as 100 THB (£2) for a dorm bed, so a really cheap but cool place to stay. We stay here on our Full Moon Experience trip of course.
One of the best bars on the island for the sunset. It offers panoramic views overlooking the ocean and to top it off has a pool in the bar! It is a bit of a trek to get to as it is set in the trees deep in the mountain side but well worth it when you get there. Great music, great food, great views. What more can you ask for!
Thong Sala is the main port of Koh Phangan. Mostly everyone who visits Koh Phangan will come through Thong Sala, though very little people stay here as they want to get closer to the hotspots and parties. Thong Sala is home of the food markets and offers some of the cheapest and best food on the island. A must do if you have a few days to kill on Phangan.
