The role in a nutshell

We’re looking for fun, passionate, energetic and adventurous Local Legends (Tour Guides) to join our South Africa team from November 2026! If you love meeting new people, know how to bring a destination to life and get a genuine buzz from creating unforgettable experiences, this could be your kind of adventure.

 

As a Local Legend, you’ll be so much more than a tour guide. You’ll be the storyteller, the problem-solver, the local expert, the hype person and sometimes even the unofficial photographer! You’ll bring South Africa’s incredible culture, people, landscapes and hidden gems to life, helping our travellers experience the country through the eyes of someone who truly knows and loves it.

 

We’re looking for people who are available to lead tours across Cape Town, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) and Johannesburg, with the flexibility to travel between destinations as our tours require. You’ll be responsible for creating a welcoming, inclusive and exciting group environment where travellers arrive as strangers and leave feeling like lifelong friends. What you’ll be doing:

 

Creating unforgettable adventures

You’ll be the face of TruTravels on the road, leading groups of international travellers through some of South Africa’s most incredible destinations. From the energy of Cape Town to the coastal experiences around Port Elizabeth and the vibrant culture of Johannesburg, you’ll help travellers discover what makes each destination special. You’ll bring the itinerary to life, create memorable moments and make sure every traveller feels welcomed, included and excited about the adventure ahead.

 

Bringing South Africa to life

We don’t believe in simply showing travellers the sights. We want them to experience the real destination. You’ll share your local knowledge, stories, traditions and recommendations, introducing travellers to the people, places, food and experiences that make South Africa so special.

You’ll help create authentic connections with local communities, champion responsible tourism and encourage travellers to experience destinations with curiosity, respect and an open mind.

 

Bringing the group together

One of the best parts of a TruTravels adventure is the people you meet along the way. You’ll create a fun, welcoming and inclusive group environment, helping travellers feel comfortable from the moment they arrive. Whether you’re breaking the ice on day one, bringing everyone together for an evening activity or making sure someone who’s a little quieter feels included, you’ll play a huge part in creating the famous Tru group atmosphere. You’ll bring the energy, the personality and the good vibes, while making sure everyone feels safe, respected and looked after.

 

Keeping everything running smoothly

Behind every unforgettable adventure is someone making sure the details are taken care of. You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of our tours, including:

• Managing daily schedules and ensuring the itinerary runs smoothly
• Keeping travellers informed, organised and excited about what’s coming next
• Managing tour expenses, budgets and operational administration accurately
• Responding calmly and confidently to unexpected challenges or changes
• Following company safety procedures and supporting traveller wellbeing
• Keeping in regular contact with our On-Tour Experience and Operations teams
• You’ll be someone who can balance having fun with taking responsibility, knowing when to bring the energy and when to take charge.

 

Championing the Tru experience

You’ll represent TruTravels and everything our brand stands for. That means delivering brilliant customer service, maintaining high standards of professionalism and always looking for opportunities to make our experiences even better. You’ll encourage feedback, share ideas and help us continuously improve our tours. We love people who think creatively, take initiative and aren’t afraid to suggest a better way of doing something.

 

What we’re looking for:

We’re much more interested in your personality, passion and attitude than someone who simply ticks every box on a traditional job description.

 

You’ll probably thrive in this role if:

• You’re naturally outgoing, friendly and love meeting people from all walks of life
• You have a genuine passion for South Africa, its culture, people, history and incredible destinations
• You have previous experience in tour guiding, group travel, hospitality, tourism or a similar customer-facing role
• You’re a confident communicator who can engage, entertain and connect with different personalities
• You know how to create a fun atmosphere while remaining professional and responsible
• You’re organised, reliable and comfortable managing multiple moving parts
• You’re a natural problem-solver who can stay calm when plans change
• You genuinely care about people and go out of your way to make others feel included
• You’re confident working independently and taking ownership of the traveller experience
• You’re comfortable working with international travellers and adapting to different cultures and expectations
• You’re open to feedback, keen to learn and always looking for ways to improve
• You’re flexible with your working schedule and comfortable spending extended periods on the road
• You bring positive energy, a great attitude and a sense of adventure to everything you do

 

A few important requirements:

• Availability to start from November 2026
• Ability and willingness to lead tours across Cape Town, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) and Johannesburg, including travelling between destinations as required
• Flexibility to work weekends, public holidays and extended touring schedules, as and when on tour
• Strong spoken English and excellent interpersonal skills (another language is beneficial)
• Previous experience leading multi-day group tours would be a big advantage, but we’re also interested in people with the right personality, local knowledge and potential to become brilliant Local Legends
