1. MENJANGAN ISLAND: Best for Coral Diversity and Manta Rays
Some of the best snorkel spots around Bali are found around the bays of Menjangan Island. Lying 10km northwest of Bali, the island is protected by the West Bali National Park. The word "Menjangan" in the Javanese language means "Deer". It has been said the name was given by the local population, who observed wild deer herds swimming to the island every spring. Watch out as it is not a surprise to see a deer swimming in the water here!
Beneath the crystal waters, you will find vibrant coral and a vast variety of sea life. It's almost as if you are swimming in an aquarium! Get those Go Pro’s at the ready as you might be lucky enough to snorkel with manta rays and turtles whilst in Bali!

3. TULAMBEN: Best for Shipwreck Snorkeling
Besides the sandy beaches, Tulamben offers unique underwater scenery, which is even visible from the surface. Among the schools of fish is the famous USAT Liberty shipwreck. The ship has been sunk for more than 40 years, making it the number one snorkel/scuba diving destination in Bali. The shallow area of the wreck lies only about 4 meters, or 13 feet deep, making it easy to access even by snorkelers. In the water, the Wreck sits from about 3m all the way down to 28m. A deep and daring dive but for sure worth it!
4. MANTA POINT- KOMODO NATIONAL PARK: Best for Large Marine Life
Are you feeling daring? Or fancy something a little bit different? There are many snorkel spots around the Komodo National Park. But, if you head to the Manta Point you might be lucky enough to snorkel with some incredible manta rays. The Komodo National Park is 1,817 square feet and was established in 1980 to preserve the largest lizard in the world - the Komodo dragon. Top tips for snorkelling in Bali:
1. Trust the locals
This is not a time to go off the beaten path... be sure to always listen to locals' advice, they know the safest and best spots and will give up-to-date information.
2. Time it with the tides
Snorkelling is safest and clearest during calm seas and slack tide (just before or after high tide). Avoid strong currents, especially in areas like Nusa Penida, where they can be powerful. Again, if you’re unsure, ask locals or guides for the best time to head in.
3. Protect yourself (and the reef!)
Wear a rash guard or long-sleeved swimwear to protect against sunburn and stings. The Bali sun is intense, and reef-safe sunscreen alone won’t last long. Never touch or stand on coral, and keep fins away from delicate reef structures.
4. Gear up properly
If renting gear, check the mask and snorkel seal before heading out. A leaky mask can ruin your trip. Fins are especially useful in Indonesia’s waters, where gentle currents can pick up quickly.
5. Respect the wildlife
Indonesia’s reefs are home to manta rays, turtles, and even reef sharks. Keep a respectful distance, don’t chase or feed them, and just float calmly. This way, you’ll see more natural behaviour and avoid stressing the animals.
