Your Borneo adventure starts today! Fly into Kota Kinabalu International airport, where you’ll be greeted by one of our legendary Tru Crew and taken to our cool Eco Lodge.
Get some much-needed rest and relaxation before heading out with your new travel buddies for a welcome dinner in the thriving capital of Sabah - Kota Kinabalu city. Enjoy a few sunset drinks, stroll along the bustling KK waterfront and soak up the charming atmosphere and hustle and bustle of the local markets, and nightlife.
Immerse yourself in Borneo’s culture and history at the Mari Mari Cultural village today, situated amidst a remote forest setting, away from the hustle and bustle of Kota Kinabalu. You’ll be introduced to members of the main 5 ethnic tribes of Sabah, Borneo and get a real-life perspective of their daily life and traditions. Learn about the Head Hunters of Borneo, meet their ancestors and listen to the stories of the Bobohizan - the High Priestess of a tribe.
In the evening, we’ll relax and take in the stunning sunset which has often been voted number one in the world!
If you’re an animal lover, you will love today’s activities! In the morning we’ll leave Kota Kinabalu and set off to Sepilok, Sandakan. Enjoy the scenic view of lush green jungle and small local villages on our drive before arriving at our jungle resort.
Take a quick dip in the pool, freshen up and head to Borneo’s Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre set amidst 43km² of lush forest. Approximately 80 orangutans live free in the centre’s reserve. The centre focuses on rehabilitating orangutans so they can be released back into the wild. Keep your eyes peeled as there are also around 25 babies living in the nurseries at the centre too!
Next up, we visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre next door, to see some of the world’s smallest bear species. The centre provides care, rehabilitates and releases orphaned and captive sun bears. Head back to your jungle resort in the evening to spend some time chilling out with your group.
Feast on a delicious breakfast and head for Sabah’s longest river, the Kinabatangan. On the way, stop off at the Gomantong Caves, an intricate cave system inside Gomantong Hill before checking into our adventure lodge.
Get your cameras ready as you’re in for a treat! Immerse yourself in the beautiful wildlife Borneo has to offer, on an evening Kinabatangan wildlife river safari. Go on the search for Borneo’s famous wildlife and birdlife and see if you can spot pygmy elephants, orangutans, crocodiles, proboscis monkeys and the myriad of birds living in the region. If you’re a fan of wildlife, this will be your heaven!
This evening we'll settle into our riverside lodge overlooking the beautiful mountains to get ready for tomorrow's activities.
Wake up to the sound of gibbons calling and hornbills chirping and head off on a morning river wildlife safari to see the wildlife that are most active in the morning. After a morning spent on the Kinabatangan River, head back to our lodge to check out and head for Kundasang, Ranau.
Ranau is known for its World War 2 Death marches and is home to the Kundasang War Memorial and Gardens. Learn about the rich history of this unique hill district and visit one of the first memorials to commemorate the brave Australian and British prisoners of war who died during the infamous Sandakan-Ranu Death march
After a day immersed in Borneo’s history, spend the evening sampling local rice wines and feasting on the local cuisine at the market stalls to experience a truly local way of life. Get an early night tonight at our hillside abode overlooking Mount Kinabalu to prepare for an early start tomorrow.
Get your hiking boots on and prepare for a jam-packed, super active day! We’ll start the day with an immersive exploration of Mount Kinabalu’s treetops. The view from the Canopy Treetop Walk really gives you a feel for the sheer size of the hundred million-year-old rainforest. Take in the sights and sounds and discover unique rainforest creatures from a bird’s eye view.
Afterwards, we’ll head to the highest waterfall in Sabah, the Langanan Waterfall that stands 100m high. Prepare for a challenge on this 3.5km trek. Enjoy a well-deserved lunch, and head over to the hot spring baths to soak your muscles after your trek. The mineral-infused hot springs have properties known to be good for your health and will surely soothe any aches you may have.
After a jam-packed week of activities, we spend today exploring our surroundings at our own leisure. Check out the local markets, treat yourself to a massage and take in the beautiful surroundings of Kota Kinabalu.
Time to head to divers’ paradise! Borneo is known for its unique marine life and great scuba diving. We head to Sutera Harbour Marina and ride the waves in a speedboat to Gaya Island where we'll be based for the next 3 days. Here you will complete your Open Water PADI course, or if you are already qualified you can choose to complete the PADI Advanced Diver or any PADI speciality course within the same time frame. Get up close and personal with the vast array of tropical marine life including reef sharks, snappers, angelfish, clownfish and turtles if you are lucky!
Enjoy your last breakfast in paradise before you say your goodbyes. Your group leader will be there to help you organise your onward travel no matter where you are going in the world.
