FAQS

When is the best time to travel to Vietnam?

Vietnam has lots of microclimates and the weather changes by region, so the best time depends on where you’re heading:

North (Hanoi and Ha Long Bay): October-April is cool and dry and perfect for sightseeing and hikes. Winters up North can get chilly.

Central (Hoi An and Hue): February-August offers dry, sunny days, while typhoon season is usually September-November.

South (Ho Chi Minh City): November-April is warm and dry and ideal for beaches and city exploration.

Best overall if you want a mix: March-April or September-December. Rain showers are normally short and sharp though so don't let the rumours of rainy season put you off!

Is Vietnam expensive to visit?

Vietnam is often considered excellent value for money compared to other Asian destinations. You can eat really well and enjoy some amazing activities for a very low cost. It's a super wallet-friendly location.

How much time should I spend in Vietnam?

Plan for 10-14 days at minimum to experience the highlights, like Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City, without feeling rushed. If you can stretch to 3 weeks, you’ll get into off-the-beaten-path regions and experience more diversity and other bucket list moments like Sapa or the Hai Giang Loop!

Do I need a visa to visit Vietnam?

Yes, visitors usually need a visa or an e-visa before travel, though citizens of some countries have short-stay visa-free entry (e.g., UK travellers for up to 15-45 days depending on rules at the time). Always check up-to-date entry requirements before you book.

What vaccinations are required for Vietnam?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for most travellers, but commonly recommended ones include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. We always recommend speaking to your local doctors, we're not medically trained so can't give official advice on vaccines you need/don't need.

Are there ATMs in Vietnam?

Yes! ATMs are widely available in cities and towns, though rural areas may have fewer options. Visa and Mastercard are usually accepted (especially at bank ATMs), but cash is still king, especially at markets and local stalls.

Is Vietnam LGBTQ+-friendly?

Vietnam’s big cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hoi An are open and welcoming to LGBTQ+ travellers.

What languages are spoken in Vietnam?

Vietnamese is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist zones, hotels, and restaurants, but learning a few local phrases always scores points with locals.

Can you drink tap water in Vietnam?

No, tap water is not safe to drink. Stick with bottled or filtered water. Ice in larger city hotels and restaurants is often from purified sources, but it’s safest to ask or stick to bottled if you’re unsure.

Is Vietnam safe?

Yes, Vietnam is considered very safe for travellers. The biggest risks are petty theft in crowded markets and navigating hectic traffic (especially motorbikes). Stay aware, use reputable transport, and keep your belongings secure.
