7 Days in the Galápagos: The Ultimate Island Hopping Backpacking Route
Thinking about a Galápagos backpacking route but not sure where to even start? You're in the right place. The Galápagos Islands are one of those bucket-list destinations that sound almost too good to be true until you're standing on a black lava beach watching a marine iguana casually stroll past your feet like it's the most normal thing in the world.
If you've only got a week, don't panic. Seven days is enough time to island hop your way through three of the best islands in the archipelago. This is the ultimate 7-day Galápagos itinerary, covering San Cristóbal, Isabela and Santa Cruz, the classic land-based island-hopping route that gets you the wildlife, the beaches and the volcanoes without needing a small fortune for a live-aboard cruise.

Why Visit the Galápagos Islands?
Because nowhere else on Earth looks like this. The Galápagos sit around 1,000km off the coast of Ecuador, and centuries of total isolation mean the wildlife here never learned to fear humans. Sea lions nap on park benches. Iguanas sunbathe in the middle of footpaths. Giant tortoises amble across the road like they own the place. You're not viewing wildlife from a distance here, you're existing alongside it!
It's also the place that inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Add in some of the best snorkelling on the planet (hammerhead sharks, sea turtles and playful sea lions, all in the same place), volcanic landscapes that look like another planet, and beaches that regularly top "best in the world" lists, and you start to see why the Galápagos consistently ranks as one of the top islands to visit on any serious traveller's list.
It's not a cheap destination, and it's not a party destination either; this is one for the wildlife lovers, the adventure seekers and anyone who wants a trip that actually means something. If that's you, keep reading.

What is the best route to see the Galapagos Islands in 7 days?
San Cristóbal → Isabela → Santa Cruz
There are a handful of inhabited islands you can base yourself on in the Galápagos, but for a 7-day trip, this three-island route is perfect. Here is a bit more about each island!
San Cristóbal - your arrival point, laid-back beach town vibes, sea lions everywhere
Isabela - the wild card, volcanic landscapes, flamingos, penguins and the best snorkelling of the trip
Santa Cruz - giant tortoises, the main departure hub, and the Charles Darwin Research Station
This is the classic land-based Galápagos island-hopping itinerary, and it's the one most backpackers and independent travellers choose because it gives you cruise-level wildlife encounters at a fraction of the cost.
The Perfect 7-Day Galápagos Itinerary
Days 1-2: San Cristóbal
You'll almost certainly fly into San Cristóbal from Quito or Guayaquil (via a short stop in Guayaquil), so consider Day 1 your soft landing. Drop your bags, wander down to Playa de Oro right in the middle of town, and get ready to have your mind blown by just how close you can get to wild sea lions without them batting an eyelid. Honestly, half the fun of San Cristóbal is just walking around town and watching them take over benches, boats and beaches.
Day 2 is all about getting into the water and up into the highlands. Kick off with a snorkelling trip to Kicker Rock (León Dormido), a dramatic split-rock formation rising out of the ocean that's home to reef sharks, sea turtles and, if you're lucky, hammerheads cruising the deep channel between the rocks. In the afternoon, head up to watch the sunset from Punta Carola! The perfect end to the day!
San Cristóbal bucket list:
Sea lion spotting at Playa de Oro (bring zero expectations of personal space)
Snorkel Kicker Rock
Visit the San Cristóbal Interpretation Center
Watch the sunset from Punta Carola
Days 3-4: Isabela Island
Hop on the inter-island speedboat over to Isabela. Isabela is the largest island in the Galápagos and the wildest-feeling of the three. This is volcano country: five active shield volcanoes have fused to create the island's distinctive seahorse shape, and the scenery here genuinely looks like nowhere else on the planet.
Day 3 is for exploring Isabela's volcanic side. Visit the Wall of Tears (Muro de las Lágrimas), or take a day trip up to Sierra Negra, home to one of the largest volcanic craters in the world. The hike across the crater rim and onto the more recent lava flows feels like walking on the moon.
Day 4 is your marine wildlife day, and it's the one people talk about for years afterwards. Take a boat trip to Concha Perla, where you'll find mangroves that go on forever! The snorkelling here is 10/10 too!
Isabela bucket list:
Hike the Sierra Negra volcano crater
Visit the Wall of Tears
Snorkel Los Tuneles with sea turtles and reef sharks
Visit Concha Perla
Days 5-7: Santa Cruz Island
Another speedboat transfer (around 2.5 hours) brings you to Santa Cruz, the most developed of the three islands and your final stop before flying home. This is giant tortoise territory, and it's also where most multi-island trips wrap up, since Baltra Airport (the main gateway back to mainland Ecuador) sits just off the north coast.
Day 5 is settling in and exploring Puerto Ayora, the island's main town, followed by an afternoon at the Charles Darwin Research Station, where you can learn about the conservation work being done to protect Galápagos species, including the ongoing giant tortoise breeding programmes.
Day 6 is tortoise day. Head up into the humid highlands to see giant tortoises roaming completely wild in their natural habitat, lumbering through the long grass at their own unbothered pace. While you're up there, don't skip the lava tunnels, an underground network you can actually walk through.
Day 7 is your final morning. Grab a last ceviche, pick up a souvenir or two, and head to Baltra for your flight back to the mainland.
Santa Cruz bucket list:
Giant tortoises roaming wild in the highlands
Charles Darwin Research Station
Explore the lava tunnels
Snorkel or relax at Tortuga Bay, regularly ranked among the best beaches in the world
Galápagos Island Hopping: What You Need to Know
1. Getting around
Inter-island speedboats (locally called "fibras") run daily between San Cristóbal, Isabela and Santa Cruz, taking around 2-2.5 hours each way. Book tickets a day or two in advance where you can, and pack seasickness tablets regardless of how good your sea legs usually are.
2. Budget
The Galápagos isn't a shoestring destination; there's a mandatory $200 National Park entrance fee (cash, paid on arrival) plus a $20 transit control card, and inter-island tours add up quickly. That said, a land-based, island-hopping trip like this one is significantly cheaper than a multi-day live-aboard cruise, while still covering the same bucket-list wildlife encounters.
3. When to go
The Galápagos are a year-round destination, but the waters are calmest and warmest (better for snorkelling) from December to May, while June to November brings cooler water, choppier seas and the best conditions for spotting marine life like whale sharks.
4. Wildlife etiquette
The two-metre rule is non-negotiable. Never approach or touch wildlife, however tempting it is when a sea lion pup decides your flip-flop looks interesting. Sticking to marked trails keeps both you and the ecosystem safe.
The honest truth about backpacking the Galápagos independently: it's completely doable, and this three-island land-based route is exactly how most backpackers and independent travellers do it. The logistics (permits, speedboat tickets, tour bookings) take a bit more planning than your average trip, but get the route right and seven days is more than enough to tick off giant tortoises, volcanoes, penguins and world-class snorkelling in one unforgettable week.
