The Best Time To Visit The Komodo Islands

The Komodos are pretty spectacular year-round, but if you want to make the absolute most of your Komodo island hopping tour, timing is everything!

DRY SEASON: April to November

This is peak adventure season. Clear skies, calm seas, and the best visibility. The best months for snorkelling are April to October, when manta rays are most reliably spotted at Manta Point, and the water is calmer too.

April to June is particularly magic, Padar Island is still lush and green from the rains, making the famous three-bay viewpoint look almost unreal. Temperatures are comfortable, crowds are lighter, and you'll be able to hike to the summit without melting. July to August is peak season, the weather is outstanding but you'll have a few more fellow adventurers around. Still 100% worth it. September to November is the sweet spot: the crowds thin out, but the weather stays excellent. This is prime time for Komodo island hopping tours if you want that balance of good conditions and breathing room.

WET SEASON: December to March

The wet season brings occasional tropical downpours and rougher seas, which can limit boat access to some spots. That said, the islands take on a different kind of beauty. This time of year, you'll find dramatic skies and far fewer tourists. The Komodo dragons are still out, too, so you won't miss them, don't worry!

2. How To Get To The Komodo Islands

Fly into Bali (Denpasar) First! Most international travellers will land in Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) it's the main hub and well-connected to Europe, Australia, Asia and beyond. From Bali, you have two main options to reach the Komodo region:

- Fly to Labuan Bajo (LBJ): This small airport on Flores Island is the gateway to Komodo National Park. There are daily domestic flights from Bali (roughly 1.5 hours). From Labuan Bajo, all Komodo island hopping tours depart by boat.

- Start from Lombok and island-hop east: This is the route TruTravels' legendary 9-Day Komodo Island Hopper takes, beginning in Lombok, travelling through Sumbawa and Moyo Island, then spending three epic days on a private liveaboard sailing into the Komodos. This is, without question, the most immersive way to experience Indonesia's island hopping.

- From Lombok to Labuan Bajo by Boat: Lombok (easily reached by ferry or short flight from Bali) is the starting point of TruTravels' island hopping route. From here, the journey east takes in Sumbawa, the secret gem of Moyo Island, volcanic Satonda Island, and then the full Komodo National Park experience by liveaboard. It's the full Indonesian adventure, not just the Komodo highlight reel.

- Visas & Entry:  Citizens from most countries receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in Indonesia, extendable to 60 days. Always check the latest entry requirements before you travel, as these can change. Your TruTravels guide will support you with all the on-the-ground logistics once you're there.

Why a Boat Tour is The Best Way To Explore The Komodos...

Sure, you could base yourself in Labuan Bajo and do day trips. But let's be honest, that's like going to Hawaii and spending the whole time in the airport hotel. The Komodo Islands are spread WIDE, and the only way to truly explore them is from the water. That's exactly why we built the 9-Day Komodo Island Hopper. The centrepiece of our Komodo Island Hopping Tour is a 3-day, 2-night private liveaboard, a TruExclusive, where your home is a traditional boat sailing the heart of the National Park. Wake up anchored next to a deserted island. Fall asleep under a sky absolutely filled with stars. The ultimate way to explore!

Why We Will ALWAYS Choose to Island Hop the Komodos:

- You Wake up AT the destination: Arrive at Padar for sunrise before the crowds even think about getting up.

- Access the hidden spots: Remote beaches, secret snorkel sites and manta rays that day-trippers simply can't reach.

- Sleep under the stars Fall asleep on deck with nothing but ocean and sky, a TruExclusive experience.

- More island time: No rushing back to a hotel. Three full days of island-hopping, snorkelling and exploring.

- Local food cooked on board: The boat crew cook incredible local meals, all included in your tour price.

Top 5 Places to Visit in The Komodo Islands

If you want to make sure you hit the true highlights on your Komodo island hopping tour, these are the five places you absolutely cannot miss.

1. Padar Island Viewpoint

Padar Island is a showstopper. From the top, you're rewarded with one of the most breathtaking views on earth. It looks like something from a fantasy film. The hike to the top takes around 20-30 minutes and is steep in places, but every single step is worth it. On TruTravels' liveaboard, we sail here for sunrise, anchoring the boat overnight so you can make the climb in the cool of the morning and hit the top just as the light turns golden.

2. Pink Beach

One of fewer than ten pink-sand beaches in the entire world, Pink Beach is one of those places you have to see to believe. The blush colour comes from tiny fragments of red coral mixed into the white sand, and in the right light (early morning and late afternoon), it genuinely glows. But this beach isn't just about the Instagrammable sand. Just metres offshore lie some of the most vibrant snorkelling in the whole of Komodo National Park. Pink Beach is a signature stop on the 9-Day Komodo Island Hopper, and for good reason.

3. Manta Point

Manta rays. Up to four metres wide. Gliding beneath you. This is Manta Point (also known as Karang Makassar.) It's one of the most legendary snorkel and dive spots in Southeast Asia, and a non-negotiable highlight of any Komodo island hopping tour. The dry season (April to November) gives you the best odds of a manta encounter, with calm waters and excellent visibility.

4. Komodo National Park (and the dragons!)

Komodo dragons are found on just five islands in the entire world, and here you can walk among them. These prehistoric reptiles can grow up to three metres long and weigh over 70kg. Walking through Komodo National Park with a local ranger and coming face-to-face with one of these creatures in their natural habitat is, without a doubt, one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on the planet. Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering nearly 2,000 square kilometres of islands and ocean.

5. Satonda Island

This is the hidden gem that separates the TruTravels Indonesia island hopping experience from a standard day-trip package. Satonda is a small, largely uninhabited volcanic island just off the coast of Sumbawa. At its centre sits a saltwater crater lake, believed to have been formed over 10,000 years ago and later filled by a tsunami caused by the catastrophic eruption of nearby Mount Tambora. Local legend says that if you tie a rock to one of the trees lining the crater rim and make a wish, and that wish comes true, you must return to the island to give thanks. This is another MUST-visit stop and another awesome spot on the TruTravels Komodo Island Hopper trip.

So there you go! There's our ULTIMATE guide to exploring the Komodo's. Our main advice would be to explore by boat! You'll experience so much more and maximise your time in this magical place!
